fortinbras has no reason to fight, while hamlet has a 'mother stained and a father killed'. yet fortinbras marches with 20 thousand men while hamlet sleeps at night and does nothing....I'm sure there is a soliloquy which explains very clearly the contrast.

The final foil to Hamlet is Prince Fortinbras of Norway. The reason he is included, as a foil of Hamlet, is he also seeks revenge for the death of his father, the king. Fortinbras goes about his revenge is a different way than Laertes and Hamlet though. Fortinbras goes to war over a useless piece of territory simply to uphold the honor of his father. The honor of his family is as important to him as it is to Hamlet. The single difference about the revenge of both is that Fortinbras doesn't procrastinate like Hamlet did. Again, this shows the reader Hamlet's careful approach to decision making. [The inclusion of Fortinbras is very good, but could you have explained more of the implications -- Fortinbras doesn't procrastinate, and Fortinbras lives; Hamlet procrastinates, and Hamlet not only dies, but causes the deaths of many others]

a foil is a character used to advance the plot. IF that character wasn't there, how could Hamlet make the information known.

writing plays is hard - the only way to advance the plot is to say it or gesture it - there is generally not a narrator to add the fine points needed to make sense of what is going on. So an author adds a character that the main character can bounce ideas off of -

example:
Main character: what do you think of that car?
the foil: well it's not as good as the Jaguar that you had in high school, or the really swell vintage red thing you drive now - what's it called?
Main character: it's a 68 Mustang with $^%#$^% (i don't know why I used a car for an example)....that is .....

the main character could not have just started talking about their amazing car without the foil to bring it up in the first place.

good luck

A foil is a secondary character who contrasts with a major character and, in so doing, highlights various facets of the main character's personality. The author may use the foil to set up situations in which the protagonist can show his or her character traits.
