Alabama was made a territory of the US by the Territory Act of March 3, 1817 and was admitted as a state on Dec. 14, 1819 as the 22nd US state.

The first documented visit of Alabama by a european was by de Soto in 1539. It was colonized by the English, French and Spanish
prior to becoming a US territory.

On January 11, 1861 The State of Alabama adopted the ordinances of secession from the Union. Until February 18, 1861 Alabama was informally called the Alabama Republic. It never changed its formal name which always has been "State of Alabama."

Alabama soon joined the Confederate States of America, whose government was organized at Montgomery on February 4, 1861.

Following the War Between the States, Alabama was readmitted to the union in June 1868.
