If you watch a video on how they make a Steinway you will be very impressed. But if you don't want to spend the money then you might want to check out Boston Pianos. Like Yamaha they are made in Japan, but under license from Steinway and the sound is absolutely gorgeous. If I couldn't have a Steinway I'd take a Boston. They have a similar sound board which is part of the secret to that special sound. The difference in playing on a Yamaha vs a Steinway is like the difference between a store bought apple pie and your mother's homemade with real butter and apples from the back yard. Every piano player should have the option of playing on a Steinway.
Bosendorfers, Baldwin, very fine instruments but give me a Steinway.

Steinway is better. They have more experience, their pianos have a better sound but they are expensive.

Yamaha will give you more options if you have a limited budget.
