Around age 50 is when a woman's "biological clock" stops ticking if you will, and with increasing age a woman becomes progressively less capable of caregiving.

Society also tends to put emphasis on beauty and age in terms of a woman's top qualities (but not so much men). Men for example can look "good" at any age. They can even have gray hair and look "distinguished", "wise", "have character" etc, while women just look old. A woman seems to be valued much more if she has beauty and youthfulness.

Why does society feel that women over age 50 are worthless?

I certainly do not feel this way. Old age is a positive attribute for anyone.

I'm over 50 and I don't think I'm worthless.
I ride bike ,exercise, and jump on the trampoline to stay fit and trim.
I work a full time job lifting up to 200 pound people at times(running circles around younger employees). Then come home to take care of other people.
I'm not saggy or baggy and have few wrinkles.
And I bet I could teach the younger people a thing or two!!

Blimey!! Since when is care giving and child bearing all there is to life for a woman. It isn't for a man, and certainly isn't for a woman either. Now days when a woman turns 50, she still has almost half of her life ahead of her. She doesn't have a bunch of kids to take care of and if she doesn't want to clean the house she doesn't have to. At that point in her life, even if she has been a wife and mother all her life, she can start to think about what she wants, how she feels, where she wants to be. She can be her own person and her kids should be able at that point to bloody well look out for themselves.

And who on earth told you that men can look good at any age? They need glasses. Wrinkled, saggy men look just as bad as wrinkled saggy women. And nowadays, 50 doesn't have to be wrinkled and saggy. Women exercise and stay firmer longer. With today's cosmetics, and I don't mean make up, skin stays smooth and firm longer. And if it doesn't, who cares? Most aren't trying to attract a man anyway.

When I turn 50, watch out world! Well, actually, the world better be watching out for me already and I'm only half way there. LOL

I pray you are just having a bad day. You really should be feeling better about yourself than you are. I am 47 and still full of life. I am working on my PHD, helping raise my granddaughter, a sucessful business woman, in a succesful marriage, have 2 great kids, a lovely home. I love myself and everything I stand for.
I do the best I can each and everyday and set my standards and goals in life to the highest so I know I can sleep well at night. We all have made our share of mistakes but God is always there to help us repent, move on and learn.
Stop living in the negative and move on over here in the positive.
Like they say, it takes more muscles to frown than it does to smile.
You are only worthless if you say so.
I know I am not worthless. That is what you should be saying on here!!!!! Out with the pessicism, in with the optimissism.
You have to love yourself before anyone else can love you!!!

I don't think society is that way. My mom is just getting her life started at 50, she owns her own home now, she is still beautiful and doesn't even have grays yet. She takes care of grandkids not in school while we work and she has my 13 yr old sister dancing like nothing you've ever seen the girl is amazing with a baton.

Of course not. Society is slowly changing its view due to the fact that women over 50 are no longer tolerating such a ridiculous attitude. Women strive to be healthy, intelligent, and strong. Women over 50 are changing the "typical" face of beauty by showing what it truly means to be beautiful. And, the benefits from the strides women over 50 are making against ageism will spill over to show women in their 20's, 30's, and 40's that it's okay to grow older, and life doesn't stop when the biological clock stops ticking. Life stops when we stop living it.

No, men get old and saggy too. And women 50 yrs old and older aren't useless they are wise and a lot of them age gracefully not to mention a lot of them are grandmothers and valued by their loved ones.

People are brainwashed into thinking that's all women are good for is being pretty and once they are gray and old they are discarded like nothing because they are no longer young and beautiful (well, in today's society's eyes anyways). Society holds high standards. It's a sexist society.

Yes there are a lot of women over 50 who hate men and they are worthless, but the others who aren't radical feminists/DON'T hate men are okay.

Because society is full of idiots, money- hungry assholes and the media. Idiots think anyone unlike them or not to their liking is worthless. Money- hungry assholes enforce this train of thought to get money out of women over 50 who think they need bullshit products. And the media is basically the idiots pacifier and the Money- hungry assholes` giant advertisement.

ok, ok, geez. alright, this is what i think. it is because of all the horny dirty old men. they would rather look at the young women . its a nature thing.. then its a jerk man thing..

women rock at any age, and i think grey hair on a lady means wisdom earned. life lived... and time to enjoy...i just hope i rock when i am 50.
