There might be a great deal of reasoning behind some very stupid things, however the stupidity of the act and the seriousness of the outcome quickly push whatever reasoning there was aside to be forgotten.
But just remember, it is only considered stupid when it fails. If you succeed at doing something stupid people generally regard you as a hero in some form or other.

Maps. I don't think that we have enough maps for the peoples african that have no maps. They need to educations and start to map where the Americas are.
Oh wait...that was a bad reference. Some people are stupid. They have had the opportunity to learn and blew it off. That is the difference. Ignorant people do not have the chance afforded to them. That is just my opinion though....

Most of the points have been covered above and I agree with most of them
lack of good education and ignorance;
lack of good upbringing;
lack of reasoning and intelligence, etc.etc.
but to my mind one important aspect which makes people act stupidly is arrogance. Lack of all the above factors makes people think that they are always right and they fail to appreciate the other person's point of view.
A really good allround upbringing makes a person humble polite and appreciative of others. He shall let the 'wind blow from all directions' and never do stupid things.
But, alas, we have to carry along with all sorts of people.

Does there have to be a reason? Some flowers are red and others are yellow. What's the reason for that? It's just nature, and some people are just naturally stupid.

Your' very question is an oxymoron,Dear,there IS NO REASONING behind true stupidity.Why else do you think the explanations are always SO lame?"I don't know" "I didn't mean it to turn out this way!" "I didn't know [blank] was gonna happen!" Stupid people,and non-stupids who do stupid things,are NEVER,EVER using whatever sense of reasoning they have(or don't).The part that kills me,is THEY never have to adapt to living with US,WE are the ones who have to learn how to share space with them!Arrrrgh!It's doable,though.
