I've always wanted to know if trapped at sea or on a desert island, whether or not this method would work to create drinking water.

Yes, it is an old trick.

Dig a hole, you can put some water in but there is moisture there to evaporate anyway. place a cup in the middle of the hole. Cover it with some transparent plastic weight the edges with rocks, and place a small pebble in the middle to cause a dip in the center to give the condensate a way to drip into the cup.

Yes, the water will be safe BUT the taste of water will be not good(saline type).

That would be how desalination plants (pre-reverse osmosis) worked. You would have distilled water, which is perfectly safe.
