There's a unique property water has, after it reaches 4C it starts to expand as it freezes, this increases the volume of this fluid which is still being held in a constant volume. This in turn increases the pressure that the expanded liquid is exerting on the walls of the glass container whose elastic limit is exceeded causing it to shatter. Guy-Lussac Law, or Pressure-Temperature Law applied to the unique properties of water.

as water freezes it is expanding and the glass is not a flexible surface, so when the water grows too much for the space it has no choice but to break out.
