Chronic heartburn is usually from acid reflux - stomach acid is getting past the little valve and into your esophagus. You also should know some natural ways to treat your heartburn. Learn them here https://tr.im/acidrefluxremedies
The most immediate thing you can do is to stop drinking coffee and cola. Smoking is not good either, but that might be harder to stop. Don't over-eat. Don't lie down too soon after eating. Don't burp too much - this carries acid up with the burp.
heartburn the most common symptom of acid reflux disease (also known as gastroespohageal reflux disease, or GERD). Heartburn feels like a burning pain in the center of the chest. It is caused by acid from the stomach backing up into the esophagus. is a symptom of acid reflux disease (GERD) Also known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

If the esophagus has become damaged enough by acide backsplash, the opening to the stomach doesn't open and close properly. In that case two things can happen (and they both happened to me):
1. When a person is lying flat or sleeping, stomach contents can back up into the espophagus. If the fluids get far enough, the person can start to choke when the stuff gets into the windpipe. A sleeping person would awaken choking on harsh stomach fluids that burn at least as bad as a heartburn. If the amount of fluid is a lot, the person will "vomit". I put "vomit" in quotes because there's no retching at all - the stomach contents just flow out because the opening to the esophagus doesn't close correctly.
2. If the opening to the stomach is continuously irritated and damaged this way, it can become inflamed and swell shut. Then the person will have a lot of trouble swallowing things. This was easily fixed in my case by a surgeon using some kind of dilating tool. I was put out for the operation, didn't feel a thing. There were no incisions since he went in through the mouth.
I should add that prescription and over-the-counter acid blockers such as Prilosec and Prevacid have completely controlled the situation. I never get heartburn or "night choking" any more, but I have to make sure I take that med every day!
BTW Prevacid is pretty expensive but Prilosec is now sold over the counter and can be bought on sale for about $30.00 for a month's supply. All things considered when it comes to medication these days, that's not such a bad deal.
Good luck,
Big Al Mintaka

My daughter was 2months old when she was diagnosed. Her Dr. realized she wasn't really gainning weight and she spit up a lot and would choke when drinking her bottle. She took an upper Gi xray and it proved positive so she was given a medicine to help her and her dr also recommended I sit her up during feeding and put cereal in her milk to help keep the food down. She is 4yrs old and no longer has it.
