it's all about ones and zeros. When the laser is on, it's a one, when the laser is off, it's a zero. All computers work with nothing more than ones and zeros and telecommunications is loaded with computers. The advantage to lasers is it is light so the information travels at the speed of light and it can be focused tightly and aimed precisely.

They're not.

All modern communication is actually carried out by little gnomes making smoke signals. They've just gotten much faster over the years.... smaller carpets... stronger arms, etc.

point to point communication between buildings, secure military communications.....technically, most F/O and muxed F/O communication is with monochromatic LEDS ( laser by definition )
