If they connected remotely you'd need to have logs showing their IP address to have any hope of a criminal case.

if they simply walked in and used it, then the machine was clearly unsecured, and "free for use" so harder to do anything.

What can be done ? Not a lot unless the files have significant commercial value. You can however learn about computer security and m,ake sure paswords systems are active.

If it has happened, if it is serious you can go to the police and get a search warrant and they'll take the other person's computer and find any files stolen, unless you don't know who did it.

if its not that serious you can always try asking the other person, search on their computer systems, stuff like that.

If done through hacking your firewall should have picked a few things out.

hard to do anything about, harder to prove. the only way is if you can prove they had access to the file the DAY that it appeared on their computer. and you have to have access to their computer to make sure its the same file. have to compare file hashes. and then you have to prove that you didn't email, put on disk. or in other way transfer the file to the second party. so .. good luck.
