learn how to dance! Generally speaking for guys, if you are not confident don't try to do anything too much and watch other guys who are popular with girls. It sounds lame, but at least then you won't stand out.

Well, you never said that you Do or Do Not know how to dance. Soooooo...
My answer would be to ask her out on a date... BEFORE Homecoming... and take her to a local Dance Studio !
Take a one-night class together !
First... it's FUN.
Second, if you Do know how to dance she'll see you move and therefore relax about the whole thing.
Third, if you Do Not know how to dance, then you'll both get a good lesson, TOGETHER, and she will, therefore, relax about the whole thing.
A Win - Win - Win Proposition.
Have Fun !

Just take some time and practice with her. 99% of the people on the dance floor at places like that look like retards. Seriously. Especially guys. They sway back and forth slightly and put their hands over their heads, looking self conscious. No sense of rhythm, nothing. Not like anybody's looking at you anyways, with all the other horrible dancers out there. Girls look bad too, but the curves of their bodies make it look less lame. Still just one short hip and shoulder wiggle and they do it the whole song though. They can't follow the most beats. They all suck, so just have fun. I'll be you she won't notice your dancing when everybody else is just as bad or worse. Even hers.

Well, if you know how to dance, then you don't have a problem, if you don't know how to dance, then take some basic lessons from someone before the dance! i had the same problem when i got married, i had no idea how to dance, and tried to scrap the bridal waltz altogether, but my husband knew hoow to dance and the DJ made it compulsory only the morning of the wedding, so in between the wedding and the reception, my husband took me to a half hour tutor, everyone was so confused, wondering where the bride and groom got to, but the bridal waltz ended up being the highlight of the evening for everyone, even me! and it only took half an hour!

Well if you know how to dance. Tell her so and show her so if necessary.
If you don't know. Learn. Now. Ask a close girlfriend or relative to help you out.
