Hi, I get bored at home and I am thinking of learning to quilt. I am getting a sewing machine for my birthday so I wouldn't have to do it by hand (I would give up).
So is quilting basic blankets hard? What about like table runners or placemats? What all does it entail?

Quilting is a great cure for boredom. It is as easy, or as challenging as you make it by your selection of block pattern, & materials that you choose to work with. Start with a simple project, say a pot holer, or a placemat to see if you like it. Then work your way up to a table runner. Caution though, it's very addictive, & can be an expensive hobby unless you are a smart shopper.

Look around your area for a "quilt shop" or an independent fabric shop (probably not a chain shop). Many shops offer classes for beginning quilting or sewing, or for specific projects/patterns. Table runners/placemats can be fast, fun, and a great way to decide if you like the hobby.

The sewing machine shop will probably provide at least one lesson in learning to use your sewing machine. This will be an overview of how to use the features of the machine, not how to sew in general. They may have a recommendation for classes in your area, though.

Another option is to attend a quilt guild meeting. Many guilds allow guests to attend a meeting; there you can link up with quilters of all skill levels and specialties. Many guilds have advantages to joining; my guild has a book library of almost 200 books, a newsletter every month, show and tell like a mini quilt show at every meeting, sewing bees/how-to classes, and local quilt shops give a discount when I show my guild card.

It is not hard only time consuming, so if you are bored what a way to go.
With a little imagination, some fabric and your sewing machine, who knows what you can make.
Further advise, maybe you could have a few lessons at a sewing machine shop on how to make quilts.

It's just a sandwich of 3 layers - top, stuffing and bottom. Sometimes the top is made up of simple patches or complicated ones. It can be as easy or as hard as you want! A table runner is an excellent starter project.

Yes - start on something small like a cushion, so you don't get fed up with it. There are many books, most of which give basic instructions (I have bought one or two on Amazon). Good luck, and be warned, it's addictive.
