Has she been asking about it? If she has then it's definitely time to tell her what sex is about, before someone else (like other students) tell her. Be honest with her, tell her that it's not quite hugging, but that a man's privates (or use the proper words) enter a woman's privates. And then you can tell her about the sperm and egg so that she understands fully. If she isn't asking about it yet, you could test the waters, ask her if she has been hearing anything about sex at school from other kids, but if she hasn't let it go for a little longer.

I think my mom did it best (at least for me anyway). She sat me down with a pencil and paper in her hand. She then drew ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the uterus. She told me about how all those worked. She explained why the egg goes into the uterus. Then she told me about sperm and where it comes from ( i cannot remember if there were any pics for this lol)
She then explained about the penis and the vagina and how it worked. After she was through I looked at her and said, "I would NEVER do something that gross! Mom that is disgusting!"
It boils down to this. She just told me about the anatomy and how the sperm gets into the vagina. There was no elaboration. She just told me what I needed to know at that age. I was 10.
You seem to already have established an openness about sex. just keep it up!

Just give her in depth details. Don't hold anything back. Kids need to know this before they turn into teenagers. Most kids know how babies are made when they were 4 or 5. I think some studies said kids should know that around 2 to 7 years of age.
Go to the library and borrow some sex education books. That would help you.
And don't go to meatspin.com. Its a porn site. Somebody did that trick on me before.

My 9 year old daughter knows where babies come from.
If she is old enough to have pubic hair and have growing breasts, she should understand what sex is at her level.
Very important....at her level. You would not have the same type of conversation with an 18 year old vs a 10 year old.
Ask your schools librarian or your childs pediatrician what books they recommend. Any detail you get into it up to you and the childs ability to understand it is most important.
I have found that the American Girl book series is a great starting point (The Care and Keeping of You is a good girls book)

There are a couple of good answers on here already, but I just want to recommend a book which might help.
"What's the big secret" by Laurie Krasny Brown and Marc Brown.
I used it with my 10 yo daughter and I highly recommend reading it together!
Otherwise just speak with her like she's a young adult who doesn't know the vocabulary yet (respect her intelligence, but explain it clearly, completely and honestly), because sexually speaking that's what she's becoming right now.
When I was growing up girls got "the class" (sex ed, part I) in fifth grade and boys in sixth grade...waiting until 9th grade is pretty dumb! What are these Young people supposed to do between the beginning of puberty and 9th grade (four years!!!)? Teach her, let her know what your expectations and boundaries are and don't be embarrassed to speak frankly about sex (just no first-person accounts!! if all you know is your own experiences, talk about them in the third person....your kids don't want to know your business.).
One last piece of advice...download the episode of "This American Life" from NPR titled "How to talk to kids." It'll be a big help.
:-)

Be honest, and tell her everything you think is appropriate.
Hang out here long enough and you'll see 100s of kids asking "did I just get pregnant?" because they tried to figure it out on their own instead of an adult treating them like a kid with a valid need for information.
When I weigh in on these things, I explain hormones, instincts and nature's drive to keep the species alive. In a year or so she'll suddenly have those instincts and if she doesn't know what's going on she could think she's lost her mind. (I've seen those questions here too. "What the heck is going on?!?" is the usual headline.)
Too much information is better than not enough. Other wise she'll hear rumors like "oral sex makes your boobs bigger" and believe them.
Good luck! If you need help, were here.

Talk to her in a way that won't make you or her ashamed.Tell her details and name everything with their real names.I think she's old enough to understand.I'm 16 and I know all this stuff since I was 10.Face her as a mature child. This talk will most probably save her life, for sure.If she knows from now, there are less chances she 'll make wrong choices in her life. Also I want to congratulate you, because you seem to be a very caring and responible parent

Look 11 is way way way to late hence all the american teens getting pregnant.
In european countires like holland they start age 4..
and give lessons all year every year till 18 covering everything in detail and ai mean eaverything.
Hence few teenage emotional problems let alone pregnancies or stds.
hence you never get dutch kids asking coulsd she be pregnant I pulled out.
not even Dutch 6 year olds are that dumb.
By teenage they know all about bjs, masterbation pregnancy, contrception in fact experts on everything before they even hit teenage.

And you need to loose the clinical angle... life is not like that.
Sex is about feeling, pleasure, passion, love, horniness... and you need to come in with that in mind.
And cut the soppy crap... kid will get laughed at.
YOU HAVE TO COVER EVERYTHING INC MASTERBATION, BLWJBS, FINGS, SPERM ON FINGERS, HOW YOU CAN GET PREGNANT IN ALL WAYS THAT SPERM CAN GET IN.
THE REASON WHY 95% OF TEEN PREGNANCIES OCCURE IN THIS SITE DUE TO PEOPLE THINKING PULL OUT WORKS IS PRECILY YOU ATTIUDES OR
NOT ANYTHING GROSS.
ITS ONLY GOING THROUGH ALL THE ICKY DETAILS THAT YOU COVER HOW SPERM GETS THROUGH PANTIES.
How it transfers say after the guy takes off the condom and accidently gets sperm on fingers then carries on making love involving fingering to get girfriend her orgasim too and cuddles etc that the sperm can trasfer.
likewise no you cant get pregnant from a bj unless you spit on hand and then finger self which is how Boris Becker the tennis player ended up the biological father of a money grabbing gold digger fan even thoguh they did not have sex.

I did this last week with my 10 year old son I sat down with him and drew pictures of ovaries and a fallopian tube with the eggs in them and how they travel down to meet the sperm which got there by SEX. then it grows into a baby. please tell her the right thing sheesh!
