AL I like(soccer)football dude.I admit that I still absolutely love basketball.but I do like this sport.I still think it has to be a big sport here for it to be the worlds greatest sport as so many people like to call it.just cause you got tickets to the 2005 final doesnt change what it is.still a major tournament.

17 answers

1. Brazil
2. Argentina (although you could argue #1)
3. U.S.

Mexico better than the U.S. in the last 5 years? That's a joke. If the Gold Cup didn't matter then why did Mexico send their A-team? Last 5 years U.S. is clearly better. Fact: Head-to-Head since 2000: U.S. is 8-2-1 against Mexico since 2000 and have a winning record (something like 12-7-7 against them since 1990). And I don't even need to bring up World Cup 2002.

FIFA Rankings aren't worth S__t. Its a convoluted formula based on 10 years of performances. Do you really want to argue that Greece is better than the U.S. or Mexico? According to FIFA they are.

Put away your national bias and look at the facts

As World Cup results show, CONCACAF is not equal to CONMEBOL. On results, the U.S. is the top team in CONCACAF. On results, the top two teams in CONMEBOL are Brazil and Argentina. Until teams from CONCACAF win the World Cup or the Confederation Cup (or at least have equal numbers in the later rounds on a consistent basis), I have to go with Argentina being the other team in the top two.

While Argentina had a bad result in Asia, they made the quarters in Germany and were eliminated by the hosts on penalty kicks.

Argentia also finished second to Brazil at the 2005 Confederations Cup.

Based on World Cup results and Confederation Cup Results, you have to rate Brazil over everyone else in the hemisphere. Based on the same, Argentina seems to still be ahead of Mexico and the U.S. When you add in the Gold Cup (which this last time only consisted of teams from CONCACAF), there is an argument for ranking the U.S. ahead of Mexico.

Hey, your fans from the other section will have trouble finding you if you ask this question here. Have you given up on trying to talk to them? In the last five years, Argentina has had a much better team that the USA. They are the #2 team in the Americas. If they were a Concacaf team, then they would have more trophies. Gold Cups are nice, but the tournament isn't as hard to win as the Copa America.

That is hilarious because 3 gold cups. Gold Cups are nothing!!! I don't understand how the supposedly top team of the America's gets last place in Copa America. I really don't understand it. Not only that the Conmebol didn't even consider the US for Copa America until last year and I think we know why now. From my understanding we always remember the top team or first place. Second place is nothing nobody remembers the top 2 teams it is always the TOP TEAM. Brazil will always remain the best in the Americas and thats a fact. Now give me my points I know my answer isn't stupid and ignorant like yours

haha its funny becuase when Mexico loses we come up with the same excuse we played with our olympic team and you guys don't seem to take it so i'll do the same with you. Mexico for some time now has had to deal with Copa America and Gold Cup at the same time. The US had its first experience this year and as you can see Bradley made a horrible decision, and I admitt how many times has Mexico won it now(gold cup)??? I can't remember but how has that exactly had an impact worldwide?? Same with the Asian Cup it is not like Iraq is going to be the best team in the world now. Egypt won the African Nations cup do you see them beating Brazil. NOO!! I am tired of you bringing up "my team" i thought we were talking about Brazil and the US. That to me shows your ignorance so don't try to play the ignorant card with me bit(h

the only emotional person is you. And what other minor national tournaments are there?? Gold Cup and Copa America seem to be the only one? you could back up whatever you want with facts but nobody and i mean NOBODY remembers the top 2 it is always the top team. So you yourself are the one being naive, that is like me saying Mexico is the third best because we got second place in the GOld Cup and third in Copa America. Its not like that dude. Your either the best or your nobody and the US is nobody

The top teams are Brasil, Argentina and Mexico. In this order IMO!

*when it comes to championships winners, you've to understand that since there lots of them, teams choose wich one to take seriously! For Brasil, for example, since almost all of the players are now playing overseas and they have their own commitments there, they can't be at the Brasil's coach disposal! Same happens with Argentina, etc.
Therefore, not all the tournments are alike! And honestly, Gold Cup is anot as expressive as Copa America!

I really wish the US would give soccer a real chance!!!

The Gold Cup...?
I agree with Rafa on the importance of this tournament.....

If I was able to get tickets the day before of the Final for the 2005 Gold Cup Final on Ticketmaster with no problem, in a stadium, Giants stadium, that was half empty.....Tells me that no one really cares......

I don't believe wining this tournament justifies your reason to consider the USA as one of the best in the Americas.

BTW....I remember you from another post....you wrote to me and I quote:

"I like soccer but I don't take it seriously either.now if it was a real sport I would take it seriously."

You want us to answer intelligently but in fact, your comments don't meet to those standards.....

Hmm?

Edit:
read my comments carefully...LOL
I never said it wasn't a Major Tournament......

Tournaments are important to those that care about it.
I am South American.....Gold Cup doesn't mean much to me....You, as a US FAN, means a lot more to you.
So thats understandable.

Their is a major final this weekend, very important tournament for many nations....Specifically for those in the finals : South Africa and England.....yet....because we are in a country where the sport is not even on Sportscenter....it ain't of much importance to us. Doesn't mean its not a major tournament.
BTW...its the Rugby World Cup Final.....
Check it out....you think the NFL is brutal....watch these guys going at it for 80 minutes non stop.

"Argentina hasnt lifted a major national team trophy since 1993 dude.they're overrated big time."

When Argentina and US last played Argentina beat the shiza out of us. They beat us 4-1 and honestly the score didn't reflect how uneven this game was, Argentina lost in pks in the quarterfinals of wc 06 (huge upset in my opinion), the US scored one goal the entire tournament. Here's more food for thought:

USA's Best: Dempsey, Donavan, Bocanegra
Argentina's Best: Messi, Aguero, Tevez, Riquelme, Crespo, Milito

Not too close is it.

Geez.....a lot of hate in these answers. Well, I think that the US is certianly up there. I am not sure about the top two teams however. Brazil is certianly #1. However, #2 is extremely debatable. I would personally feel that Argntina, the US, and Columbia rotate at #2. That being said, I would pic the US for now.

The U23 team we sent to the COPA was definately not the one of the best. But, the US has to be considered one of the best (if not the best) in North America based on their record against Mexico and Gold Cups, since 2002. They are nowhere near one of the best of both continents combined, yet.
