Get at least a Geforce 7600GS. ATI X1950 Pro would be better.

I have a Radeon 9600xt (worth ~$60) and can play portal. I would suggest that you get the fastest card you can afford though. Check around for the best prices. Make sure that it has Directx 9 support. Speciffically, shader model 3 or higher if you want the best visuals.
