A Business Segment is a part of the company that has operations that can function on its own independently from the company, the factors affecting its operations, sales, growth etc are different from the rest of the company, and it operates in a different segment of the market from the rest of the company.

Segments are either business or geographical [IAS14.9].
Business segment : A component of an enterprise that (a) provides a single product or service or a group of related products and services and (b) that is subject to risks and returns that are different from those of other business segments. [IAS 14.9] As an example, if a group has diversified interests and owns retailers (like Target) as well as financial services like insurance companies. These might be reported as 2 different business segments as they have very different risks and business margins.
Geographical segment: A component of an enterprise that (a) provides products and services within a particular economic environment and (b) that is subject to risks and returns that are different from those of components operating in other economic environments. [IAS 14.9] If a group has businesses in democratic countries with lots of freedom as well as in communist countries with lots of restrictions (say, in remitting of currencies out of the country, in ownership, etc), these might be reported as separate geographical segments.
