Jefferson wrote that governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed.

Are you suggesting that people who consent...are sheep?

Its a vicious cycle. Once you are incumbent, you have access to the money, machinery, etc, that helps you get elected.

Let's put it this way. I live in Massachusetts, and thus if I want a new Senator, I have to find someone who is going to defeat Ted Kennedy. How many people out there have the resources to compete with that?

You're only a sheeple if you don't tell your representatives your concerns and expect them to respond to those concerns if they are legitimate. Representative means they are supposed to respond to their constituency. Most of them take care of their responsibilities to the people they represent within their state. Its the federal issues that they seem to waver on. That is why the same ones keep coming back, election after election.

It is big business interests that have too much influence in national elections. They own most of the candidates and the mainstream media.

Your choice for president in '08 will likely be limited to two corporate hacks.

The lesser of two evils.

it's a big part of the downfall, but you can't ignore apathy on the part of the american people. people are too busy watching sitcoms to pay attention to political matters, which are "boring". not only that, but some people actually like what you or i would consider to be responsible for the downfall. there's plenty of blame to go around.

US citizens have the greatest power over any politician and have the right to question anyone's authority no matter what their rank or position.
