It's just pine tar that has rubbed off from his batting gloves to his helmet.

Most players have their equipment managers clean their helmets, but Manny for some reason prefers to keep the tar on his helmet.

It's pine tar and NO it is not a Boston tradition. Many players do it now. It goes back to the 80s and George Brett. Vlad Guerrero does it too.

I'm assuming that you are not a Sox fan so I will enlighten you. It's a tradition in Boston to smear tar on your helmet. A few years ago the players that did it were called the Dirt dogs (the original being the great Trot Nixon) Don't be so down on team traditions that you don't understand.

It's pretty much a superstitious thing. Everybody on the Red Sox roster had it during the 2004 post season.

with those greasy dreadlocks under the helmet, i bet the inside is even grosser than the three shades of doodoo pine tar on the outside of the helmet.

and they may not have the funds anymore, clearly the money laid out for the ever so average dice-k, j.d drew, and the contract they took over for gagne, these investments clearly have paid off "big"

His helmet is covered in pine tar. Its eitehr because he uses it to sticky his gloves up between pitches or its just his fashion, I vote later.

That's actually "scuff marks" from years of being bounced around in the dirt.
A lot of players have certain superstitions about their equipment, and this might be one of his.
