A W is a non-grade. It only matters in issues of financial aid and satisfactory progress. Nobody cares if you dropped a class or two as long as they weren't paying for it.

A W doesn't impact your GPA and it can't go away because it is a record of something that did happen. There are plenty of good reasons to have a W -- there are no good reasons to have a D or F.

Now, a WF -- that's a whole 'nother animal.

you cannot replace that. it would be very good if you DO retake the class.....because if you get an A in the class, it shows that the W may just be from some unfortunate circumstance.

BUT, if you retake the class, the W will still be seen in your transcript.

W's cannot be taken off and universities do look negetively to them. The do bring your GPA down in some colleges and most colleges calculate a W if you retake the class as a final grade for a W class.

A lot of the top universities dont admit students with W's unless they show a dramatic change and give justified reasons (like Army service) in there essay.

Not at the university where I teach. The Ws stay on there even if you retake the same class.

A W never goes away, but as long as it is a W and not a WF(withdrawal-failing) you're fine. Nobody cares if you drop a course if you take it again later. Like I said before, the W never does go away, but it will not effect your gpa either.

"W's" aren't a big deal as long as you don't get too many.
