You really should go when you are old enough as your gyno can detect many cancers while they are still treatable. I guess you are never going to have sex either? I think as you mature you will change your mind about this. It is vital for a womens health!
I just read that one girls advice and you do not need to see a gyno just because you are having your period. It is recommended before intercourse though. As long as your periods are normal you don't need to go for awhile. If you should have excessive bleeding you would need to go sooner than that. Yes it is an embarrassing exam but it is pretty quick and you can have someone there with you like your mom or sister but I preferred to go it alone. It is kind of uncomfortable but the good news is you usually only have to go once a year! Also as a nurse who has been in the room for many exams the nurse and doctor know how to deal with your feelings and keep you covered up as much as possible to make you as comfortable as possible.

If you have a history of breast/cervical cancer in your family, yes it is important to get check ups. Even so you don't want to chance getting HPV or anything else.
You would never be forced to do the exam but it is very important, for all females that are sexual active.
The exam isn't that bad, 10 minutes at the most. Doctors/nurses have seen it all and heard it all.
If you feel uncomfortable you can have someone in the room with you.
I would encourage you to get one. If you are good to go some doctors recommend coming in every 2 years now instead of once a year.

At your age it's good you don't want to have kids. But you do need to get yearly pap smears especially if you are sexually active, which I hope you are not yet.
They don't drag you out of your house.
I chose a female gyn because she has the same thing you do and understands everything you are going through. Honey, gyns see that thing many times a day everyday. One Dr. told my mom it was like looking at someones face.
Plus when you get older there will come a time when you will think about getting married and having a baby.
Getting a pap is just part of being a woman. It's not the most pleasant experience but it doesn't hurt. Well it may hurt your pride a little. But it can also save your life.
I had a pap that came back abnormal. It was precancerous cells. So they cut them out, under anesthesia of course and had to have normal paps every 6 months for 3 years until I could go back to yearly checkups. Everything worked out well. If I hadn't gone I might have never known until it was too late and ended up dead.

Your friend is either lying to you or misinformed. No one ever HAS to have any sort of medical test or exam. It is always the patient's choice. If someone tried to force you it would be sexual assault! It's up to you to decide to go or not.
I also take issue with the above poster who wrote this:
"Plus when you get older there will come a time when you will think about getting married and having a baby."
Every woman does not want to get married or have a baby! I'm in my thirties and I've NEVER wanted to get married or have a baby.

You really SHOULD. You need to make sure your nether region is in good working condition. You should do this PRIOR to having sex, and would be even better if you do it after you start menstruation (but not on your period).
People WON'T pull you out of your house and MAKE you get one, but you really should for your HEALTH.
I got mine at age 11 and had a pelvic exam after my first period.
How old are you?
You may change your mind in the future about children, and even if your mind hasn't change it is VERY IMPORTANT that you get a pelvic exam!

yes, it is absolutely necessary to see a gynecologist. Even if you never plan on having kids, which being on 13 I wouldn't rule it out yet, I'm sure you plan on having sex at some point in your life and you have other organs/part of the body that need special attention. Many GYN cancers have minimal symptoms until it is too late to treat, regular GYN visits help catch problems before they get out of hand.
Going to a gynecologist is intimidating to say the least. I will not say that you will get used to the appointment because they never get "comfortable" but finding a doctor that you trust and feel comfortable around is the most important thing.

there is absolutely no need for you to see a gyno at 13 years old !!. Unless you have female reproductive problems or fall pregnant then dont worry about it.When you become sexually active, you will need to start having pap smears every 2 years to rule out cancer growth in your cells and STD's.

Yes, it is absolutely necessary to have a pap smear and pelvic exam!! Unless you want to die from undetected cervical cancer....
Edited to add that a pelvic exam lasts for maybe 5 minutes and does not hurt. It is very important for female health.
