Afraid of it exploding near them.
It's possible that something happened in her childhood that caused this, like if it exploded in her face and it terrified her. Happened to my little cousin and he didn't get near balloons for years.

I have two reasons whysomeone would dislike balloons. One is that they love drama and the balloon you were fondling was a great catalyst to give them a stage. Secon, some people cannot stand the thought of waiting for a balloon to pop. I experience some miniscule level anxiety as I inflate a balloon...will it pop? is it going to pop? why isn't it popped yet? Maybesomeonereally doesn't like the surprise.

Some people associate the sound of a balloon popping with some traumatic episode of their past. Vietnam vets are known to jump when a car backfires--it sounds like mortar fire to them. It could be a plain vanilla fear, like the rest of us are afraid of heights or public speaking, or it could be linked to something in her childhood.

It's the popping when you least expect it. I am not afraid of balloons, but I'm not crazy about them either for that reason.

I hate it when balloons pop. Or any kind of loud startling noise. I don't blame her!

Too strange. I have a friend who is afraid of cotton. I pulled out a Q-tip one day and she freaked.

It could go back to the time where this girl was at the circus, and a clown with balloons killed her dad.
