There must have been a very big motivation considering that 5x more Russians were killed than all of Europe and US casualties combined and considering the fact that they wer directly responsible for 80 - 93% of the German army's casualties. According to Russians, they won WWII. I agree, but thats only because I know the facts.

So what was their motivation for sacrificing so much of their country to defeated the Germans? Doesn't seem like much was in it for them.

Common enemies make strange bedfellows...as they say..... right up to the moment Hitler attacked, Stalin distrusted Churchill and FDR so much that he turned a 'blind's eye' to all the warnings given by the west of the impending invasion.

It was supposed to be divided 3 ways. France got a piece out of courtesy. Yes, the allies defeated gemany and divided it into zones of occupation. The USSR got Prussia and East germany- then gave a piece to Poland in compensation for the lands annexed from Poland in 1939- when the USSR was an ally of Hitler and attacked Poland in cooperation with the nazis The USSR was "communist" which is why all the rest of the world was supposed to be too. From 1935 the nazis and the communists were allies and cooperated in preparing and starting the WW2. These two ideologies are practically identical- power at all cost. The communist takeover of nazi lands meant a replacement of the people on top- the rest of the apparatus (especially secret police) was left unchanged

Well erm... the Germans attacked them :) So they didn't have much of a choice, really. They couldn't actually slug it out single-handed. Don't forget that up to that point the Germans and the Russians were actually allies (they had a non-aggression pact and nicely divided the Polish / Baltic cake among themselves). So they were attacked, suffered tremendous losses and therefore simply had to ally themselves with their capitalist arch enemies Britain and the US. A marriage of convenience as it were :)

And the USSR gained quite a bit from the war: they emerged from it as a first class superpower which had most of Eastern Europe under its control and got a lot of moral prestige worldwide (Stalin -who wasn't one bit better than Hitler- got the affectionate nickname "Uncle Joe"), which in turn gave communism some credibility in the West. Of course, the Cold War started only a few years later (Iron Curtain, Berlin airlift, Korean war etc) which nullified the latter.

Hope this helps.

Good question. Another fact is Russia invaded Poland along with the Germans. They were after the same thing in Poland and maybe the world.Somewhat allies with Russia, Germany for some reason turned on them and invaded Russia with little reasoning. The U.S. entrance led to the end of the War. Those are also facts. Italy even declared war on Germany in WW2. There were many reasons Germany lost. They were stretched thin and greedy.

The whole multiple front thing...what are they not teaching in school these days. Hitler was trying to concur Russia as well as the rest of Europe. Hence the Russian Front. The Russian folks didn't like the fact that Hitler was heading there way. They actually tried to help Poland stop them at their border, and Hungary! Back then they were simple farmers. They still gave the Germans a run!!!

It was a marriage of convenience. Germany attacked Poland, then Russia as well as France and Britain. Russia could not defeat Germany alone--they needed the allies to invade from the West to bleed resources off the German Eastern front. The alliance was anything but cozy, and crumbled into open hostility within 5 years of the liberation of Berlin.

Had Hitler left Russia alone, they certainly would not have entered the war. Hitler was a complete moron militarily. He fancied himself a brilliant commander, but he was anything but. Germany should have conquered Europe without much trouble at all.

Germany invaded the USSR, they had no choice but to defend their homeland.
Especially after they had signed a non-aggression treaty with Germany and Hitler disregarded it.
Maybe you should gather a few more facts about World War Two.

German-Soviet Non-aggression Pact 1939.

Also called:
Nazi-Soviet Non-aggression Pact,
German-soviet Treaty Of Non-aggression,
Hitler-Stalin Pact, or
Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact
(Aug. 23, 1939), non aggression pact between Germany and the Soviet Union that was concluded a few days before the beginning of World War II and which divided eastern Europe into German and Soviet spheres of influence.

Yes Germany attacked Russia . This was one of the largest conflicts of the war ( Germany and Russsia ) . Millions died in the Russian winters and other battles because Hitler thought it would be a cake walk , and sent them in without warm clothing . Russia was tougher than he thought , just as the Brits were . He was so intent in destroying England that he outfitted his fighter planes with only one bomb to fly to London and other UK sites . When he needed the fighters for defending German cities they were not available, to a large degree. Bad planning, as It continues to happen even TODAY .. Get my drift ?
