in the past decade or so? I'm talking about shootings and street crimes. For you older people, were things that bad years and years ago, or is it just that you didn't hear about it as much as you do now? I just get sick and tired of it all. Everyone is welcome to answer, of course, I just wanted to get some input on how it used to be and why things are the way they are now.

I was a little kid in the 60s, and I remember having the woods and fields as my play ground. As long as I was home before the street lights came on, I was good to go, and as long as I checked in with mom now and then. Now it's like you have to keep your kids under lock and key to keep them safe!

And yes, I do realize that in 1969 the Tate murders happened. ala Charles Manson. But that was an extreme case back then.

Parents are so busy trying to buy all the junk everyone else has that they don't have time for their kids. $1930 dollars for a concert ticket. Parents give their kids money, I-pods, cell phones and $300 dollar games, thinking it is the same as love, caring, and time spent with them. We had four kids and had a great time at the lake, free ball games, at the park, fishing, movies, all these good times were free. You have to give your kids yourself, not money. Our kids are 40 to 45 years old now and still talk about the good times we had together.

no, things were not that bad years ago. i am talking 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s maybe 70s. when i was just a young kid, 5 or 6 yrs old, we lived in the country. another kid my age and i were all over the countryside. in the woods, on the railroad track by the stream fishijg. not a worry. when i got married in the 40s we had a place in the country. i don't even think i had a key to the house, we would go on vacation and you could leave your house unlocked. i wont say that things didn't happen, but not to the extent they do today. i really think society is too free. if us kids did something we were not supposed to, we did not get time out. we went to the woodshed. and we did not go to carry in wood. life was at a slower pace then too. i don't know. somewhere something changed and not for the good. i feel for the next generation. God help them.

Crime in Canada has mushroomed in the last 10 years and I believe it is because of the drug problem . People are using houses in neighbourhoods as grow-ops and only get caught if there is a fire because of bad wiring. Drug dealers are right out in the open and addicts are stealing and robbing innocent people to get money for more drugs. I know what I'm talking about because my own daughter is an addict and has stolen Christmas money from her own child. We never used to have swarmings or shootings and stabbings in such numbers as now. You heard of them in bad neighbourhoods but now it is everywhere The police arrest the addicts and the drug pushers if caught are back on the street in hours. The justice system needs a a wake-up call. Our society is in a nosedive and there doesn't seem to be much an ordinary person can do about it . Please excuse if this is ranting.

As a child growing up in South Africa, we lived opposite a small lake, and during the school holidays and week ends, my friend and I would be the only people there, climbing the trees, we tied a rope to one tree and used to climb the tree and swing into the lake. We used to fish for crabs (good grief! How did I do that). And we were never assaulted or harmed. I would never do that today. Here now in Australia, older people are getting bashed on the heads, and dying, just for the little money in their purses. Just going for walks of runs in the parks, you are at risk of being raped. You have to stick to main roads where there is a lot of traffic.

Because we now live in a political correct society where right is wrong and wrong is right. People feel they need no morals or high standards anymore among the masses. It is an individual way of thinking now. No respect for human life or dignity. I still think it all started with Madalyn O'Hara's crusade with the public schools. Well you see the results. And the sad thing is, we can never go back to that innocent time.

At the heart of all the crime is a lack of education, and I don't necessarily mean classroom teaching. Far too many people are growing up in environments that do not stress respect, discipline or any measure of thoughtfulness. Some people are savvy enough to pull themselves out of this gutter, but for many their lives are conducted from a point of anger and hatred. They feel they can bully their way through life and do as they please. If they had a modicum of thought, they would realize the pain they inflict, the irreparable harm they cause and that only tragedy awaits them.

There have always been murders, shootings, rapping's etc.... I think it is just televised more now than ever. Technology in the press department has come a long way. 90% of my patients are 60 and older and they all tell me that crime has always existed but it is just heard about on T.V. more now days.

I grew up in the 80's and back than we could go outside and play without worry. we even left our house unlocked at night. There are many things that contribute to that. Kids not getting disciplined, parents who are afraid to say no to their kids. the movies, shows, songs that are so violent. lets not forget the video games.

Oldtimer and Steve summed it up for me......I tend to just shake my head these days, knowing not what I can do to help make things better other than touch and teach and guide every child that comes along MY path.

Basically, the family structure has change in our society. there are more single parents raising up their children and the good values and guidance in once given by our parents are no longer there. Too much divorce and bad relationships due to lack or communication.
