What is the meaning of this song?

I think the song is about a woman whose husband has returned home from war. He's obviously has been through a lot, as he still has shrapnel in his skin. She sees that he is afraid to be gentle and warm with her. She wants him to share himself with her, to be intimate and to feel safe. She doesn't want to just go through the motions. So she confronts him and want to know right know, "what will it be?" Is he going to be remote and cold, or is he going to open himself up.

Whatever happened to her anyway? She won the Grammy for Best New Artist in 1997 and disappeared.
