Newspaper comics or want ads are a good idea..as stated..and
others like....
*Have children draw Winter/Holiday pictures with crayons on brown paper ,tie up with a bow with string or raffia.
*Plain colored tissue paper decorated with glitter designs
*Heavy duty aluminum foil for odd shaped gifts
*Layered bubble wrap over colored foil paper
*Use wrapping paper tube to stuff soft gifts into
..ie;socks,towels,underwear,lingerie etc....
*Fast food containers (ask for an extra with your order, they usually will give them to you for free)Its fun to see their expression when they think they are getting a Big Mac!lol...

One year we used brown paper bags, inside out so the store logo didn't show, and red ribbon, on many gifts.
Another year, we used cloth in various red prints, with the quilter in the family taking it all with her as a gift from all of us.
We've also hoarded the Sunday comics for holiday wrapping, and used want ads and drawn "ribbons" with markers.
We generally don't do this eccentric wrap for all the gifts, and limit it to immediate family only, since some people feel fancy wrapping is vital.

Instead of buying a bag of those crappy bows that they sell everywhere, I always buy silk flowers and pull the flower off of the stems and use those to dress up packages. If you poke a small hole in the top of the box after it's wrapped the flower will fit in nicely and I have always thought that it make the gift look unique.

If it is from Santa, it don't get wrapped. Saves on wrapping paper.
You can take the tiisue paper and draw pictures on it, then wrap it with that. My kids did it one year for me, because they couldn't find the tons of wraping paper I had hid behind the sofa.

Duct tape...that's always fun. Or if it's oddly shaped I'll just wrap it like piece of candy.
