I found 2 definitions:
''1. the principle or practice of unselfish concern for or devotion to the welfare of others (opposed to egoism).''
''2. Animal Behavior. behavior by an animal that may be to its disadvantage but that benefits others of its kind, as a warning cry that reveals the location of the caller to a predator.''

Selflessness. To put others before self. To be willing to give up self needs/wants/desires to help others. Doing something without regard for self but only for the benefit of others. Being altruistic is the epitome of being spiritually awakened.

Altruism has VARIETY OF MEANING. Philosophically it is instinctive behavior that is detrimental to the individual, but how such behavior could exist & sustain itself.
Other meanings;- selflessness, Egoism & many more.
