My husband and I booked a trip for March. I've always wanted to do the mule ride. They ask if anyone is afraid of heights. I'm not really...as long as I feel "secure." Should I change my plans? If I cancel before they change the price, we get our money back. I'm a photographer, so I may get better photos if we hike. But don't think we can handle hiking all the way down. What other things should we consider about the trip?

It is common to be a little scared for about the 1st hour. I am an experienced rider, but the ride gave me butterflies for about the 1st hour. The mules are trained to walk on the edge of the trail so they don't knock hikers into the canyon. After the 1st hour most people start to relax and enjoy the view. I loved this trip. I went in Feb on 2000. It was great.

Here are some tips...Dress in thin layers. It will get warmer the further down you go. You will want to be able to take off some of your clothes as you go down. Also, the weather in March can be unpredictable. Bring both warm and cool weather clothes. The day I went down it was 60 degrees on the rim (upper 70's at the bottom). The day I rode out it was snowing and I froze my buns off.

I say, make the trip. It is absolutely wonderful!

This is from an actual conversation I' m hiking up the Bright Angel Trail [which is what you'll be going down ] one winter morning and obeying trail protocols I step off the trail to let a mule train go past This Englishwoman looks down at me and says " Sir .How you could possibly walk up these snowy trails while carrying a backpack ?" I look up at her and say " Ma'am How could you possibly sit on the back of animal, that has absolutely nothing to live for ? " Whether you choose to walk it [and of course i would] would be determined by what kind of shape you're in ,if you have adequate and broken in footwear and how you tolerate heat. There's a 30 degree temp difference between rim & river and by the time you cross the suspension bridge on the Colorado it will be over 100 degrees. Should the above items be in order then stuff like day packs and water bottles and clothing can alll be purchased locally if need be Have fun

Go for it. It's extremely safe as long as you don't jump off your mule.

Don't think of it as scary - think of it as exhilarating.
