I think the term democratic republic is just a label. My understanding is that a republic has representative who debate on vote on laws, in a pure democracy, every individual would vote on laws, and the majority would prevail. This might seem fair but it is not. For example, at one point the majority of people in the U.S. supported slavery, but enough Representatives from certain states were against it. There are many examples like this. But that's the only one I can think of at the moments (I think at one point the majority of people were in favor of racial segregation as well, but once again, laws were passed to outlaw it because enough representatives were convince that it was not right).

A republic is basically a system of government where decisions are made by people that represent a certain groups of people (such as Representatives and Senators representing each state). Democracy is a government by the people, where the people are allowed to vote. Thus a democratic republic is one where the representatives are selected by the people by voting.

Democracies can be republics, or like a traditional New England town meeting, where the people vote directly on issues rather than electing representatives.

Republic = a country without a monarch. Comes from the Latin "Res Publica," how the ancient Romans referred to their city government after they threw out the last king.
Democracy = rule by the people. Comes from the Greek "demos" = the people.
Thus, the US and Costa Rica are both democratic republics. The United Kingdom is a democracy but not a republic.

you're are style of speaking about a constitutional republic -- a republic by technique of it self is truly able to smashing the minority and so is the constitutional republic if it does no longer hide the minorities -- a democracy is like some state propositions yet do not grow to be a style of those that get ticky tacky and tell those that they are dumb for calling the united states a democracy -- that is in basic terms the problem-free used be conscious and many that call it a democracy comprehend the version

Democracy: a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people & exercised by them or their elected agents under a free electoral system.

Republilc: A state in which the supreme power rests in the body of citizens entitled to vote & is exercised by representatives chosen directly or indirecty by them.

Costa Rica: Was a colony of Spain until 9/15/1821. They have a Constitutional Democracy, meaning they have a form of government much like ours; however, I don't know how the selection of who is allowed to vote is worked out.

Democracy is majority rule. Republic is having a representative who represents your interests and votes on your behalf.
