The 1988 Chevrolet Nova uses a Toyota Engine. (I believe it's a 1.6L)

A head gasket replacement for that vehicle will probably run between $300-$400, assuming the heads aren't warped and everything else is in good shape.

With water in the oil, it really depends on how long you ran it that way before realizing that the head gasket was broken. Water doesn't lubricate, and you could have damaged rod or main bearings.

Only a complete engine tear down could determine the extend of the damage. The problem is, if you simply decide to do the head gasket, and shortly after the repair, you realize the bearings are shot, you'll have to have the entire engine torn down again.
