Yes I have experienced it first hand ( I work with children at a school district). It is very difficult but a very real disorder. These kids need professional help (in my opinion). A professional diagnosis from a reputable health care provider is the best way to go. If you google this disorder you will find many helpful tips and great information.

I am not a psychologist, I am a Speech Pathologist, so I don't know everything about it..However, a child with ODD has a HUGE problem with listening to what people say. They are basically oppositional and definant. I work in a preschool, and these children usually are the ones that are put in time out, taken out of the classroom because they will not listen to a simple direction, like "sit in chair, it is circle time." They are sometimes disruptive too, because the more you try to make them do something they don't want to do, the more they yell, scream, hit, spit, or other negative behaviors.

My niece has it. She's being trained to deal with it. She was diagnosed at age 5 and she's 12 now. She's mostly fine, she just has a hard time with "no", and she equates desire with need, meaning that if she wants something, it feels like she needs it. Like a new toy has the same importance as having air to breathe. She's on medication so that she does not immediately flip out if she hears the word "no".

Yes I have heard of it. Ask your Doctor or Pediatrician to help you find a book about it. Some Children's Hospitals have parents libraries and you can take out books relating to that condition.

Yes, I have heard of it. People with this disorder generally have issues with authority. The severity of the disorder varies (as does all disorders).

When I was a child it was called being bullheaded--and lots of times a good swat on the rear end cured it.

Seriously. Discourage parents from spanking, and when the children act up, call it a disorder or a syndrome and medicate them. That's what I see going on.
