This is word problems on quadratics .Explain the steps please, like What I did was let x be the smaller number and x-8 be the larger but I'm not sure if it shud be x+8 or x-8, pleae help. Explain in steps.

You would use x as the larger number and x-8 as the smaller. Or you could use x as the smaller number and x+8 as the larger. It doesn't matter.
f(x)=x*(x-8) has its vertex at x=4. The parabola opens up, so the vertex is the minimum point. 4 and -4 are your answers.

Hello,

Let s = smaller
Let l = larger

l - s = 8

so l = 8-s now the product = s(8-s) = 8s - s^2
take the derivative giving us dp/ds = 8 - 2s setting this = 0 we have 8 -2s = 0 so s = 4 and l = 8 - 4 = 4

If x is smaller, then larger is x+8, product is x(x + 8).
