In Australia we have a time called 'piccanini dawn' by the Aboriginals, this is the first light of day .. about half and hour before the sun rises .. so we would call that 'break of day' the sun appearing is 'crack of dawn' since the suns rays 'crack' the veil of night

In the moments before even the top edge of the sun is over the horizon there is a crack or break in the darkness and a streak of light along the width of the horizon.
