When I was a kid I was allergic to either straw or hay, not sure which. It was whatever my brother brought home in a scarecrow. What is the difference between the two?

Tom above is right. Hay is any number of plants (alfalfa or grass) that is comprised of seedheads, flowers, leaves and stems that is harvested, partially dried and then used as animal feed.

Straw is mainly what remains when grains are harvested (the seed heads are removed). It is mostly stems.

If it was in a scarecrow, most likely straw but could have been spoiled hay, moldy hay no longer suited for animal feed.

So were you allergic to mold from the plants, various dust and soil borne molds common to agricultural hay or grain, allergic to the pollen from the hay--for example a grass hay.

I suspect you'll have problems with both.

Hay has more nutritional value for farm animals than straw. Straw is less nurturing as a feed and better suited for gardens, animal bedding. Straw is also cheaper and probably more readily available to the public. It was more than likely the straw that you were allergic to as it is used a lot for scarecrows!

Hay has stems, leaves and seeds included. Straw is normally just stems and maybe a few leaves. The seeds have been removed.
