These are some things that help, believe it or not.

1. Meditation. Thinking of nothing or of your breathing, nice and easy, for 30 minutes twice a day and not thinking of any other thoughts will improve your memory in one or two months. It actually improves the ability to concentrate, which is a fundamental memory skill.

2. Do crossword puzzles. Start with easy ones and work up. These increase mental flexibility and concentration.

3. Practice, practice, practice. A machine well-used is a machine well-tuned. Keep testing your memory. Write test questions when you read your material. Try to select salient points and retest. You will learn to pick out salient points and you will be practicing the test. Write notes. Write down your salient points, hang them on cards, tape record them and play them in the car.

Purposely read all your days notes a few times each night before you go to bed. Reinforce the notes by going back over them in the morning. When you sleep your brain organizes all the information that you took in that day. Eat right, drink plenty of water, exercise and (though it's next to impossible being a medical student) get plenty of rest.

My father has developed a memory problem over the last few years. He has begun to work crossword puzzles daily. Also he takes a Ginkgo Biloba herbal supplement. I can tell that his memory is improving, both his short term and long term.

I hope I've helped.
