Actually it is stritcly a religious day. Commercialism, the growth in the myth of Santa has removed the importance of the day. It is now totally about how much profit the merchant made, how much debt your parents racked up to get you the gifts you want that in 6 months will be either obsolete, broken or you are just bored with them.
Wherever you live, when you ride thru the neighborhoods you see those giant decorations, people just out doing the next, but how many Mangers or Mennorahs do you see? No that is banned because we might insult out neighbor! how ludicrous we have become.
Your question covers every important holiday- how many Vets do you go visit on Veteran's Day, do you go to the parade or the sales, Thanksgiving, do you sit with your family and thank whoever you believe in for all your blessings or do you now go to the sales that they just started 2-3 years ago? I believe that on all these days ALL stores should be closed to show respect, patriotism and support, most of the things we have long forgotten.

Being a Christian I love Christmas time, the gift thing has gotten out of hand but the coming together of families is a good thing. We just need to remember the reason we are celebrating and also to remember the less fortunate during this time of celebrating. If it were just a religious holiday it would be a lot less popular but the business people are going to keep it they way it is, the Love of money is the root of all evil the Bible says, 1st Tim 6:10.

I'd celebrate the winter solstice. I'm not any denomination, so I'd still decorate the way the Nordic people have been doing it for centuries. Lots of evergreens to bring the smell into your home and beautiful candy cains to represent shepards from long ago with lots of family all around us to share warmth in winters harsh cold.
Like really hardy ales with fabulous poached pears for deserts after we all get rosy cheeked from a light buzz and a warm fire. Nothing disfunctional going on, because NO gifts other than family.
That's the way I'd celebrate it without gifts and the patron saint Nicolas... Even though he was merely a man who gave to the poor for those who had nothing.
In the UK, they have boxing day, where you give away last years gifts to the poor on Xmas morn... Wish the US had that.

I'm sure it would be less popular, but my family and I would still celebrate it. We are completely aware of the true meaning behind this festive holiday and we never leave that out. It's just also fun to include Santa and presents. :)

Actually, I find presents get in the way. yes, i would definitely celebrate Christmas. to me, it's a "religious" holiday. But also a time to get together with family and/or friends.

Sort of, I guess. I appreciate getting together with my family and the family of my significant other, but the religious value that some feel in relation to the holiday is not one that I share. I particularly like the big meal, where we all bring parts of it that we are good at making and enjoy it together. I rarely get to see my nieces and nephews, so that is another part of the day I enjoy. Actually, as far as presents go, I LOVE to give presents, but don't enjoy receiving them very much.

No. Santa is a recent marketing ploy and Christmas was popular before that. Exchanging presents, however, has been going on since the birth of Jesus.
Perhaps it is a bit secular, but these are secular times.

I'd buy all the underprivilegd kids gifts so they could celebrate than go home and cry because I never had gifts when I was little.
