Poe's short stories and poems were amazing. The ironic thing is that his sad life perhaps contriibuted to the genius of his work and enhanced its macabre, melancholy nature.
Consider the following about him:
(1) As a child, he was raised by the Allans, who were not his birth parents and who eventually disowned him.
(2) He struggled academically (he was kicked out of West Point for misbehavior) and financially (he was perpetually in debt).
(3) He battled both alcoholism and opium addiction.
(4) Many of the people he loved most died at a young age. His mother died when Poe was a child and his young wife died just a few years after they were married. Both died of tubuerculosis.

Poe's alleged mental issues are probably way overstated because A)he wrote about crazy people and B)he was the victim of one of the first great hatchet-job biographies after his death.
Among other things, Poe is credited as the inventor of the modern short story, and that rests mainly on his believe in the principle of primary or singular effect.
IOW, Poe believed that an author should set out with a particular effect in mind (sadness, dread, horror, etc) and that the story should then contribute in every aspect (details, word choice, rhythm, etc) to that effect. Find his essay about the writing of The Raven to find his own explanation of how he applied this principle to the writing of that poem.
The irony is that while Poe is often considered the king of the tortured Romantic authors from whom works just spewed out at the urging of his tortured writerly soul (and he did plenty to contribute to that image), he was a very deliberate, careful and craftsmanlike writer.

He had a difficult upbringing by a mother with tuberculosis. She died early and he didn't form good relationships with women. He prefered his women frail and in poor health, not unlike his mum. Eventually, he became morose and manic depressive. His poems thus reflect how he perceived the world and his reactions to difficult relationships.!
