When the batter touches his helmet (with all the pine tar on it), the stuff sticks to his gloves and helps him get a good grip on the bat. The reason they don't put it directly on the bat is because after a few weeks of use, the bat would start getting heavy due to all the tar caked onto it.

the baseball players(not just manny ramirez) put pine tar on their gloves so the bat doesn't fly out of there hands, then the players touch their helmet......there you go
