Referring to people in general, those whose diets and drinking habits are actively putting their health into peril, my response would be that the instant gratification of eating and drinking for them outweighs the threat of whatever health issue they are causing. Or else they are just in denial.
For me personally, I do eat unhealthy foods, but I try to balance my diet and get fruits, vegetables and other nutrient-rich foods daily as well and keep the less healthy food in moderation. I eat the unhealthy stuff because I enjoy food. Period. Some of the foods I enjoy are not good for you, but their flavors, textures and presentations bring me a certain kind of happiness. If this indulgence means a shortening of my life--I don't live so long that I can't recognize my grandchildren and someone has to be paid minimum wage to change my diaper--then I can accept that.
(Incidentally, my weight, cholesterol level, blood suger level and blood pressure are all within normal limits.)

I have never liked to eat or drink aspartame or sucralose, because their "flavors" make me nauseous. Sucaryl, the best artificial sweetener there ever was, contained saccharin and cyclamates, which I feel got a bum rap from an FDA intent on taking bribes on a patentable sweetener. Since I started WeightWatchers, I also eat less (i.e., none) of the thousand-calorie foods I used to scarf up without a second thought.

Because the whole idea of restraint and discipline has been lost.
I agree with you. Lets start a new society.

Because we're not nearly as bad off as people with nothing to eat or drink, and there are lots of those in this world.

Probably because it's easier, and it tastes good, and life is too depressing for some to confront their comfort foods and habitual drinking.

Are you talking about our diet of red meat, pepsi and oreos??? Yeah, people don't care. Most want to live to eat instead of eat to live....I am not this way....I eat veggies all day and steer clear of these foods!!
