If you're looking to live within the city limits, there are some nice and affordable neighborhoods in South City. I recommend Southhampton. It's pretty centralized and there are tons of places within walking distance. Holly Hills and Carondelet Park are good locations as well.

There are also numerous areas in the county. You might find some ideas at the following link: http://www.city-data.com/forum/st-louis/

You'll probably want to avoid the North Side (I'm referring to the city here, not the county).

If you want to live in the city I would suggest the south side. Lots of parks and small stores etc plus good bus service. Best areas are around Hampton, Jamieson or South Grand. The other area that you might look into is the central west end which is close to Forest Park

I don't live in St. Louis, but I can tell you one thing. Avoid the north side of the city. Bit of violence there.

Here's some neighborhoods:

I'm not sure if those point out the negatives of the neighborhoods, though. If you're moving you need the good and the bad of the neighborhoods.

has some info on neighborhoods.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch may have some info as well.

Here is a site where you can look up places for rent in different ares
http://www.apartments.com/partner/Area.aspx?state=mo&partner=seo&page=area&prvpg=2&type_listing=1&Rgn4=85
I would suggest going south a little. It will be cheaper and less people than downtown.

Here are some more sites to help you out and find exactly what you are looking for

Avoid St. Louis altogether. If you absolutely must move to the Lou, don't live anywhere north of Delmar or across the river on the Illinois side. That is, unless you enjoy getting shot at or mugged on the reg.
