Was the Reformation a good or bad thing?

Has the Protestant Reformation as of 1517 been good or bad?

You can't judge something as good or bad unless you make a value judgment. For example, somebody who thinks that there should be only one Church would consider the Reformation bad.

Most people would probably say that the Reformation was a good thing. Yes, it had some bad effects (such as permitting growth in the Christian heresy from which Communism would later be derived), but on the whole it was a good thing. The Catholic Church was stopped from selling indulgences and lost much of its political influence (which permitted them to improve Catholicism), and on the whole, Protestantism turned out to offer many improvements (for example, the priests were eliminated and ministers could marry). Besides that, the Puritans would be critical in founding the USA (Edwin Sandys, a classical liberal and staunch opponent of the king and his Mercantilist buddies, saved Virginia, and the Puritans founded Massachusetts; well, actually early American history proved that Communism or any other Socialism doesn't work as both Virginia and Massachusetts were founded as Communist and nearly died out as a result). Of course, most Protestant churches today are not genuinely Protestant in the original sense (for example, many have adopted politically correct ideas and others have adopted a Crusader mentality), but on the whole, the Reformation has been a good thing.

I can't see it as good or bad. A great deal of damage was done prior to the bible...I think it was good in that it did enable a greater interpretation of the bible.

This depends entirely on your interpretation of the Bible and your personal beliefs. I myself think divisions in the Christian faith to be wrong, because it puts more stress on following a dogma than praising God.
