Make sure the choke pull-off is working {doing it's job} ! If's it's a Thermo/Quad = i'm sorry !

Release the linkage from the carburetor. If the idle is now OK, then you know that the linkage from the fire wall to the carb is causing the problem. If the carb still idles high with the linkage installed, the idle set screw lead cap needs to be removed in order to set the idle adjustment screw.

Check for a vacuum leak around the engine. If you can hear a hissing sound,then you likely have a vacuum leak which will increase the rpm. Also check the coolant sensor for a bad connection or possibly a faulty sensor

set the idle speed down little with the adjusting screw.
Check for a sticking or miss adjusted choke.
check the dash pot on the carb ( if you have an automatic tranny) and see if it is out of adjustment.
