This friend of mine who is Italian-American seems to be prejudiced about the fact I have a Jewish girlfriend. I told him he is a bigoted idiot. Is it typical for Italians not to like Jews?

Some people from Christian backgrounds whether Catholic, Protestant, Greek Orthodox or Monosophite consider Jews to be "Christ killers." This is unfortunate and due to a misreading of the scriptures. It was actually the Romans who killed Christ. Most Italians are Christian or at least, Christian oriented.

Even people who leave the Christian religion sometimes still carry their old prejudices with them. Stalin was an avowed Communist atheist but he still came from a Christian background and had once studied for the priesthood. Much of his hatred of Leonid Trotsky was due to Trotsky's Jewish background.

There is also a natural tendency for eveyone not to like people outside their own groups. We tend to fear the unfamiliar and the unknown. However, a good part of the dislike for certain peoples like Unitarians, Quakers, Mormons, Jehova's Witnesses and Jews is not grounded in anything other than religion.
