Mona's salary as actuary = x
M's salary as writer = x/3
B's salary = x/2

x + x/3 = x/2 + 40000
6x + 2x = 3x + 240000
5x = 240000
x = 48000

So Mona makes 48000 as an actuary, and 1/3 of that or 16000 as a writer. Her total income is 64000, or 40000 more than her brother, who makes 1/2 of 48000 or 24000.

Let Mona's earning as anactuary be x.Therefore she earns x/3 as a writer and her total earning is x +x/3 or 4x/3
her brother's income as an actuary is half of that of Mona's income as an actuary
Therefore he ears x/2 as actuary
According to the problem
4x/3=x/2 +40,000
8x=3x+240,000 [multiplying both sides by 6]
8x-3x=240,000
5x=240,000
x=48,000
Therefore Mona's salary as an actuary is
$48,000

Hello

Let a = amt. earned as actuary
let w = amt. earned as writer

Then a = 3w and a + w = .5a + 40000

so putting 3w in for a in the second equation gives us.

3w + w = .5*3w + 40000 so 4w = 1.5w + 40000 and then 2.5w = 40000 so w = 16000 and a = 3*16000 = 48000

Now check:

48000 = 3*16000
16000 + 48000 = .5*48000 + 40000

Hope This Helps!

a = income as actuary, which is 3w, so total income is 4w. w = a/3, so 4w = 4a/3, and 4a/3 = 40000 + a/2. Then we have 5a/6 = 40000, so a = 48000.

m=mona
b=brother

m=40000+b
b=.5m

set the equations equal to each other by solving for b in the first equation

b=m-40000
b=.5m
So...
.5m=m-40000
-.5m=-40000
m=80000
She makes $80000/year
