Hurricane names go on a six year cycle. Every six years the names get reused unless a particular hurrican was particularly destructive. In that case the name is retired and replaced. For example, the name Katrina was retired after the hurricane by that name struck New Orleans and other places along the gulf coast with devastating results.

Each year they select a set of names to be used for hurricanes, tropical storms, etc (used to be all female, but they now alternate). Names are rarely (if ever) reused (and ones from major storms like Andrew and Katrina are never reselected), but those that don't get used one year (they pick more names than they think there will be storms) can be reused.
