Let's face it, we have, because of our behaviour lived under the threat of terrorsim in the UK for centuries following us going to Ireland in a bid to change them. When I lived in London, I was more concerned with street robberies, muggings and the such rather then terrorist activities.
Crime prevention, especially against firearms and ultimately drug related offences needs priority in my honest opinion. There are specialist agencies under Government control in the UK as well as links to Interpol, FBI etc. who can continue to gather intelligence regarding terrorism just as they have done for years. I admit that we must recognise the raised level of threat currently faced here, but at the same time, on a daily basis, more violent crimes are being committed and the Police are finding it harder to gather the resources needed to deal with it! The increase in the numbers of PCSOs in the UK is a cheap way to deal with petty and community related offences, and trust me, I am not being disrespectful to them as they are a help as they leave fully trained officers to deal with more serious matters, but what I find ridiculous is that they are undertrained and without certain powers that would enable them to be of greater benefit to protecting society.
People are often very quick to criticise the Police in the UK, but outside of the 2 or 3 richest constabularies, things are not good financially. For instance, why be a Police Officer in one of the Home Counties when you can earn considerably more in the Met? This is also an issue when different salaries exist in different forces, it makes no sense and will not attract the right sort of people.
The Government need to sort this out as civil defence is sadly becoming a problem in the UK with a lot of unrest. We pay our taxes to live in a safe environment, and the police, fire and medical services need to be treated better to keep us safe. Why should we fund a war against a threat that Governments were aware of and could have acted against which has ended up being a major drain on us financially as well as the moral issues? All the time our kids are shooting each other, schools are becoming more violent and gang culture is becoming more prevalent which in turn creates a very viscious circle.
Sorry to have drifted off into a rant, my answer to the original is criminals!

I agree.. terrorism is the stuff we have nightmares about, but fortunately is rare, criminals are the people we have to live with on a daily basis..... seems to be a bit of an imbalance of priorities here don't you think?

Criminals! Afterall, the crime "rate" is gaged by the # of crimes per thousand... For Terrorists- its the # of attacks per Year! Therefore, we have a LOT more to fear from the people we KNOW- than from the people we DON'T!

I don't think you'd be asking this question if terrorists were to detonate a "dirty" bomb in London, or one of our other large cities. I would also hasten to add that we are dealing with an entirely new threat, where these people will stop at nothing to inflict mass casualties.
