Work will set you free.....to ease the minds of those going to the gas chambers. Even prior to entering the chamber, many thought they were only going to be deloused.

The original camp at Auschwitz was set up as a labour camp using an old Polish Army barracks. The wrought iron gates of Camp 1 were installed in 1940 with the legend of "Work makes you free" to encourage the inmates to work hard and thereby gain their freedom. Rarely happened but was not unknown.

The second camp known as Auschwitz-Birkenau was built from the outset as a death camp and had no such encouragement on the gates.

It means Work makes you free.
I think it was supposed to be ironic. The only freedom was the freedom to die

It means "work means freedom" signifying that the work the inmates did would free them. Ha ha (not).

Literally translated, it means "Work power free". I don't speak German, but I'm guessing it means 'free labor'.

Perfect for a labor camp, huh?
