what are your views on statutory rape? and should it be legal?

this is based on a question we were told to debate in LAW CLASS.
we have to debate both sides and i need opinions. this isnt meant to be perverted.

and in the past in most cultures people married young women (12-15)year old

i know its odd but i really need something to debate with.

In Barbados Statutory Rape occurs because the minor is perceived as someone who is incapable of giving consent since they are not an adult. Rape being sexual intercourse between a man and a women without consent

in that sense, because the legislature has determined that you are only CAPABLE of forming consent at a particular age (notwithstanding any ailment which may affect your capability to give consent) statutory rape can occur.

I think that laws regarding statutory rape are there to protect people who can't protect themselves because of the inability to decide whether they want to have sex or not.

on the other side, there are some religions that allow for marriages from as early as 8 years old, but the legal framework of the country will have special laws who conform to that religious belief.

I am just not getting the sense that this quesion is coming fro a law school student.....

I stnad by my previous answer, and the other poster ahead of me had a fair answer too I thought.

I tmay be you wnat to know the answer, but adding the bit about law school makes it seem like a troll, since you don't write withthe skill of even a beginning law student.

Just thought you might want to know that.

Lots of disturbing sh*t happened in the past, doesn't make it right.

12-15 year olds are not women, they are children. We need to let them grow up and teach them to make good decisions for themselves after they are adults.

There are lots of cases and books on the subject. Try reading one or two of them, rather than getting some idiot's opinion on Yahoo!Answers.
