First Air Cavalry (Air mobile) during Vietnam era was considered most feared by NVA and Viet Cong. It was the first division in world history to exercise rapid deployment thru the exclusive use of helicopters and provide effective ground cover thru its aerial rocket artillery (ara) provided by helicopter gunships.
Jane's called the First Cav. the most dangerous fighting unit of its time. For the first time in history, enemy intelligence could never accurately determine where key elements of the division were and worse, could not project its movements. A prime example was the relief of Khe Sanh, where the NVA had 5 divisions surrounding the Marine base camp. It was thought that since the Cav was heavily engaged in Hue City and Quang Tri it could not come to the aid of Khe Sanh. Elements of the Cav not directly engaged in Hue were the first to be redeployed under Operation Pegasus and started to engage the enemy. Within less than a week, the entire division was on the offensive and within 2 weeks had totally smashed the NVA stranglehold on Khe Sanh.

good question and hard to answer. some might say the WW2 German army. Israeli special forces are pretty good. Maybe Greek Hoplites. Are you talking about individual soldiers or team solders.
