Most film directors don't even have film degrees, let alone degrees! Why is this?

I have known an engineer that is married to someone in film. She told me that of all the people they know, her husband is the only one making a living.
My son is in college and wants to take course in film. Apparently, a good number of college students are taking film courses. We have told our son that it requires ALOT OF WORK to be successful in film. He is taking other courses should a career in film become unsuccessful.

They have a piece of paper that says they went to film school, not talent, vision, and imagination. They spend thousands of dollars on a hobby, not learning a useful skill they can make a living with.
