Scribes. The way it was. The Church controled the copying of texts, scrolls, books, etc..... The scribes were illiterate, but they could draw and copy. This ensured that the texts were copied without interptation, word for word. Even though the scribes could not read they could draw. So they would embellish the borders of the pages with pictures depicting their comentary on the political powers that be, namely the Church. Makes one wonder if the phrase, "A picture's worth a thousand words", had roots earlier in history than thought.
